The upstream part of the canyon lies in the Mojave Desert while the downstream portion opens into the Colorado Desert. The preserve is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset and offers picnic areas and restrooms. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Other Desert Hot Springs attractions include Cabot's Pueblo Museum (760-329-7610), a 35-room Hopi-style adobe showcasing Cabot Yerxa's collection of Native American pottery as well as early 20th century photographs and artifacts from his Alaskan adventures. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. October through May. Tours last about 40 minutes and the admission fee is $6 for adults and $4 for students; children under 6 years of age are free.
