Brewster, Massachusetts

Brewster, Massachusetts is an ideal setting for a Cape Cod vacation. Named for pilgrim leader William Brewster, this scenic little village has stood on its own sea faring legs since 1803, when it formally separated from Harwich. Brewster was once the main spot of the shipping industry on the Cape. Today, the mansions built by wealthy sea captains are still here, beacons of a bygone era. Sitting quietly on Cape Cod Bay, Brewster has everything one could ask for in a Cape vacation. A day's itinerary can include beach combing, fishing, sailing, golf, parasailing, bicycling, hiking, shopping, sight-seeing, and any number of outdoor pursuits.

For a better understanding of the lay of the land, visit the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Since 1954, the museum has been on a mission to enhance visitors' knowledge about the Cape's natural environment. The museum contains two floors with exhibits dedicated to the Cape's flora and fauna. Included are displays about whales, avian life, coastal changes and how they affect the Cape in general, and aquariums holding various crustacean species. Behind the museum, three nature trails take visitors on nature walks to woodland areas, salt marshes, and the Cape Cod shore. The museum also sponsors nature study activities, including a seal sight-seeing excursion, an overnight trip to the Monomoy Lighthouse, and various bird watching trips.

If beach time is what you need, then Brewster is the place to find it. The village has 8 different beaches on Cape Cod Bay. At low tide, the beaches stretch out into the sea as far as 2 miles. The beaches do not have many facilities (bathrooms, etc), but are great for getting away from it all and soaking up some Atlantic sun. Families like Breakwater Beach, a short walk from the center of town, for the shallow water and calm waves perfect for small children. Another nice spot is Paines Creek Beach, which stretches out over a mile and a half of garnet colored sand. In addition to sun bathing, surf fishing is also popular at this beach.

Anglers also hear the call of the ocean. The waters of Cape Cod offer some of the best striped bass fishing in the world. If big game is your target, there are numerous charter boats available to take you out looking for tuna, bluefish, bonito, and false albacore (albies). There is excellent fishing in the 14 fresh water ponds near Brewster. Fly-fishing for brook, brown, and rainbow trout is also a popular island pastime.

Birding enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy in and around Brewster. Cape Cod is located right in the migratory pattern of over 300 species of birds. One of the best places to view them is at the Ashumet Holly & Wildlife Sanctuary in East Falmouth. This 45-acre preserve abounds with aviary and floral life. Named for its different varieties of holly, the preserve was a gift to the Audubon Society by Wilfred Wheeler. The setting is natural without manicured gardens.

For an interesting shopping experience, visit the Sandwich Glass Museum. Cyclists and hikers can get some exercise in Nickerson State Park, an area with over 8 miles of paved trails. Golfers can tee it up at the Ocean Edge Golf Course, a tricky loop with great views of the sea. Anyone who ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter should visit the New England Fire and History Museum, home to over 30 antique fire engines. Whether you are looking for fun in the sun or great shopping and cultural attractions, Brewster will fill the bill!
