At first the city was called the Dividings because it sat at an important intersection. Three of the Cherokee trails met at Clayton, and today it is still possible to see these trails when renting Clayton apartments. Explorer William Bertram came to the town in 1775. He studied the land as a naturalist. One of the Cherokee trails became a main road for the town, which is why it was renamed. Clayton cabins are smaller, homier structures in the mountains of the town. They take you back to the late 1800s and early 1900s when the Tallulah Falls Railway ran from Cornelia through the small town. It ended at Franklin, North Carolina. Buzzard Roost Mountain is a little farther drive from Clayton apartments, but also great for hiking. Snow does not often fall in this area but when it does, the surrounding area is magnificent.
