The Great Outdoors: If you having never taken a hike before the northwest is a great place to hike. Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainer National Park, Mt. St. Helens National Park are just 2-3 hours away for a short or all day hike. There are web sites and books available in the libraries or bookstores to check out lengths and ability levels for the hikes in the areas around the Northwest.
