Sandy beach: Hills Beach is a mile-long stretch of wide sand on Saco Bay. This quiet beach is ideal for swimming, walking, boating, shell collecting, bird watching, fishing, and wind surfing. At low tide you can walk across a sand bar to Basket and Monument Islands and pick sand dollars out of the surf. Wood Island with its lighthouse is just off the shore. It's a good place for boating and wind-surfing, with boat launching ramps nearby. Buffleheads restaurant with excellent food is about 1/3 mile along the road. It is 90 miles from Boston and 15 miles from Portland. The University of New England campus is within a mile of the house.
Bird watching: Sunrises are spectacular. A wide variety of wild life—birds in particular—are attracted by Biddeford Pool and the nearby Audubon sanctuary and Rachel Carson wildlife refuges. Great blue herons and snowy egrets are everyday sights. Osprey swoop for fish in the bay and the pool. In 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 a pair of rare piping plovers nested nearby. The area is listed as one of the top-ten birding hotspots in Maine.
Tourist Attractions: It is conveniently located for Maine's famous attractions. Within a fifteen mile radius are Kennebunkport; Cape Porpoise; Old Orchard Beach; Fortune's Rocks; Goose Rocks; Funtown USA; the Trolley Museum; Portland with its Art Museum, Old Port, Longfellow's house, and ferry boats to the Casco Bay islands; Wells's well-known second-hand bookstores; Cape Elizabeth; Prout's Neck made famous by Winslow Homer; and the Aquaboggan Waterslide. L.L. Bean and the Freeport shops, and the Kittery factory outlet stores are only 45 minutes by car. North Conway and the White Mountains are 90 minutes away.
