The Terrace and Garden: The farmhouse has a large sunny garden providing a superb outdoor sitting and eating area with barbecue. Shaded areas are also provided under the enormous kaki (persimmon) tree and the vine-shaded pergola. The terrace is planted with vines and offers a heady scented Mediterranean mix of lavender, honeysuckle and jasmine. The extensive garden is south-facing and is an ideal area in which to relax, to sunbathe or read a book as it is bathed day-long in the Tuscan sun, but with plenty of shade from the numerous trees. There are several olive trees, 100 vines and an orchard of plenty.

Reasons to Visit Lucca: Known by locals as ‘little Florence,’ well-heeled Lucca has much to offer - in fact the Blue Guide to Tuscany runs to some 16 pages! Built on Roman foundations, Lucca shows its long heritage most visibly in the piazza which takes it shape from the Roman amphitheatre on which it stands, Piazza Anfiteatro. But, Lucca’s more recent history can be seen from its massive tree-lined walls where the locals take their passeggiata (stroll) or hire a bike to ride the walls as the Lucchese do. They can also be seen strolling the Via Fillungo taking an ice-cream, sipping a caffé or thick hot chocolate or nibbling on a slice of pizza in between shopping—especially for the famous lingerie of Lucca. Lucca has an array of towers including the tree-topped Torre Guinigi plus around 100 churches within its walls, museums, Puccini’s birthplace, palazzi and villas and a botanical garden. Or relax by taking in a Puccini concert or one of the summer pop concerts.

Lucchese Wine and Cuisine: This area of Lucca is a serendipitous delight for all food- and wine-lovers. For imbibers, try the Strada del Vino (Wine Route) tasting the local wine along the way and, for the gastronome, set the taste buds tingling by sampling some of the mouth-watering local produce to be found in the city’s shops ranging from the local Lucchese olive oil—the most prized of all Italy’s oil—wild boar sausages, farro (spelt), locally made pasta, cheeses, hand-made chocolates, breads and cakes. Better still is to dine in some of the local restaurants which hold special events throughout the year using local seasonal produce and most restaurants nearby offers something to suit all budgets. If this doesn’t satisfy the appetite, then a host of local festivals take place celebrating all manner of food during the year such as chestnuts, porcini, polenta, rigatone, bruschetta and zuppa where the locals gather to eat and to party.
