Possessed of a quiet country charm but within reach of many transportation hubs and attractions, Emilia Romagna provides visitors with fresh air, plenty of sightseeing opportunities, and the chance to enjoy it all from the comfortable vantage point of a vacation rental.
This region of North Central Italy is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the East, the Appennine Mountain Range to the South and the Po River to the North. It is divided into nine provinces, including Bologna, Parma and Reggio Emilia, all of which contain historic towns, tranquil scenery and appealing villa rentals of various shape and size. Whether hoping to do some train travel to Milan, Florence or Rome or preferring to stay put amidst Emilia Romagna’s rolling hills and valleys, becoming immersed in the Italian way of life will be a pleasure every step of the way.
Bologna, with its numerous vacation rentals, contains the capital city of Emilia Romagna, and is best known for its cuisine, medieval architecture and lovely stretches of countryside. The city of Bologna is an engrossing place thanks to several landmark churches, including the basilica of San Petronio, as well as many miles of arcades (walkways) that make strolling through town a protected and pleasant experience. Vineyards provide the perfect accompaniment to the culinary specialties of the region, which include mortadella (a local sausage) and of course, pasta with Bolognese sauce.
Villas in the province of Ferrara capture the feeling of being off the beaten path without sacrificing the conveniences of nearby towns. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Ferrara contains a number of Renaissance-era palaces; the most famous is the Palazzo dei Diamanti, home of the National Picture Gallery. Bicycling is a popular way to see the city’s plazas, cafes and markets, and the flat landscape makes exploring the surrounding landscape a treat as well. Horseback riding, playing golf and taking boat trips along the canals of the beautiful Po Delta also make for fine ways to spend a day in Ferrara.
Like the rest of Emilia Romagna, the foothills of the Apennines are rich with small villages, wide open spaces and cultural offerings. Parma offers up cathedrals, museums, open-air opera concerts and many shopping opportunities. Teatro Regio, the Botanical Gardens and a monument called the Baptistry stand out as noteworthy attractions, but taking shelter in the sun-dappled garden of a Parma vacation villa can be just as compelling an activity.
Situated within the Appennine Mountains, Reggio Emilia offers an authentic Italian experience with the help of a well-preserved culture and stunning scenery. Geological landmarks, wineries, castles and parmesan cheese producers are just a few of the qualities that make Reggio Emilia an absorbing place to rent a vacation villa, and few visitors leave disappointed.
