Ideal getaway spot: If you want to spend your vacation gambling in casinos, shopping at outlet malls or jet-skiing, Eleuthera is not the island for you. But if you enjoy reading, napping on a beachside lounge underneath a whispering Casuarina tree, walking miles on a pink-sand beach (often without seeing another soul), this is paradise. The island is safe, the Bahamian people are friendly and the island's beaches are unsurpassed. Poponi's beach was only one of two in the Bahamas -- and one of only 20 in the Caribbean -- picked as an 'ultimate' beach in the February 2008 cover story of Caribbean Travel & Life magazine.
